Chapter 1 The King Who Thought He Was God ๐Ÿ˜ค

Long, long ago โ€” way before your grandparents' grandparents were even born โ€” there lived a demon king named Hiranyakashyap. His name means "golden-cushioned," and yes, he was very, very rich. But he was also very, very mean.

Hiranyakashyap had done something amazing โ€” he had done years and years of deep, hard meditation to please Lord Brahma, the Creator. He stood still like a statue in the forests! He sat in freezing rivers! He prayed without eating food for so long that the whole world shook.

Finally, Lord Brahma appeared before him in a shower of golden light. "Ask for any boon you desire," Lord Brahma said gently.

Hiranyakashyap said โ€” "Grant me this, O Lord! I should not be killed by any man or woman, nor by any animal or god. Not inside a house, not outside. Not during the day, not at night. Not on the ground, not in the sky. Not by any weapon that is made!"

He thought he had covered everything! He was now, in his own mind, immortal. He couldn't be defeated. He returned home and declared to the whole world:

The demon king roared โ€” "From today, no one shall worship any god! Everyone in this universe shall worship only ME โ€” Hiranyakashyap โ€” as the greatest power! I am your master, your creator, your god!"

Everyone was terrified. Even the gods hid in the clouds. All the people bowed their heads and obeyed... all except one tiny little boy. ๐Ÿ‘ฆ

๐Ÿค” Did You Know? Hiranyakashyap was actually the brother of Hiranyaksha โ€” another demon that Lord Vishnu had defeated earlier! Hiranyakashyap was very angry about that, which is why he hated Vishnu so much.
